It's not usually the shingles. In $Toronto we see three failure modes drive 80% of winter roof callbacks: (1) pipe boots crack from UV and let meltwater in above the ceiling, (2) step flashing at the chimney or dormer pulls loose in freeze-thaw and wicks water down the wall, and (3) clogged gutters back water up under the first course of shingles.
